Donor visit to Borno state 13-15 February 2017
Deputy Head of Mission, Mrs. Pippi G. Søegaard took part in a mission to the North Eastern state of Borno on February 13-15. Norway was invited by the United Nations with 11 other donors to Nigeria. The trip was organised by the UN Humanitarian Coordinator as a preparation for the first ever Humanitarian Conference on Nigeria and the Lake Chad region, which will take place on 23rd-24th February in Oslo. The conference will be organized jointly by Norway, Nigeria, Germany and the UN.
During the visit, the group met with internally displaced people in Maiduguri, Gwosa and Bama, and listened to their stories. They also met with several UN agencies, civil society representatives, religious leaders, military commanders, and finally with H.E. the governor of Borno state, Mr. Kashim Shettima. Issues of the huge need for humanitarian assistance, reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure in and between damaged towns and villages, security, movement of people, saving lives and also saving livelihoods were discussed during the three-day very successful visit.
